Happy National Coast Guard day!

The Coast Guard is turning 226 on Thursday. The branch is one of America's five armed forces.

The Coast Guard was founded in 1790 when the first Congress authorized 10 vessels to be constructed  in order to enforce tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling, and to protect the collection of federal revenue, according to Military.com.

August 4 is recognized as a day to celebrate the Coast Guard and all the men and women who have dedicated their lives to the service.

The Coast Guard is a branch that consists of military, maritime, and multi-mission services.

Locally, the Coast Guard has countless duties along the East Coast, keeping our lands and waters safe.
