Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries makes change for 2016-2017 hunting season

Posted

If you plan to hunt doves, waterfowl and other migratory birds, you must now be registered with the Virginia Harvest Information Program (HIP).

Hunters will now be issued a HIP permit with their hunting license instead of being issued a HIP number as in the past.

The permit will identify that hunters will be hunting migratory game birds, including doves, waterfowl, rails, woodcock, snipe, coots, gallinules or moorhens. A new HIP permit will be needed for the 2016-2017 season.

When purchasing your hunting license, select the HIP permit option and it will be added to your license and customer account. The HIP is free.

Hunters who are exempt from buying a license still need to register for HIP.   Exempt hunters can create a customer account here. To find out more about HIP please visit the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries’ website.
