Norfolk Councilman wants city to consider decriminalization for small amounts of marijuana

NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk Councilman Paul Riddick wants the city to consider decriminalization for small amounts of marijuana.

Riddick says he doesn't want his position to be mistaken for legalization of the drug.

He wants the city to consider decriminalization for small amounts of the drug.

"So many individuals and youngsters who are ruined, they're felons, because they had small possessions of marijuana, and this would eliminate the number of persons who would lose all of their mobility by becoming felons," said Riddick.

The councilman says he got the idea from former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.

Daley felt that police officers were getting tied up and taken off the streets for petty marijuana possession charges.

Riddick would like decriminalization to be a part of the legislative package the city sends to the General Assembly.
