PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A second lane in the U.S. 58 West Midtown Tunnel opened Friday. This is the first time ever that motorists can travel in two lanes on U.S. 58 West under the Elizabeth River.
The Elizabeth River Tunnels Project partners announced the opening on Thursday.
Motorists using the Brambleton Ave., ramp to access the Midtown Tunnel will now feed directly into the right lane toward the new tunnel with no merging required.
Traffic merging south on Hampton Blvd., heading for the Midtown Tunnel will flow directly into the left lane of the new tunnel.
The East Midtown Tunnel will remain having a single lane from Portsmouth to Norfolk while that tunnel undergoes rehabilitation.
