Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office breaks ground on new jail expansion

Posted

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – The Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office broke ground Monday on the first permanent expansion of the Chesapeake Correctional Center in nearly 20 years.

The $29 million expansion will include a 47,282 square foot building adjacent to the existing jail that will house 192 inmates in the new Community Programs Center.

Sheriff O’Sullivan says the new developments will streamline jail operations, and allow inmates to log more working hours and earn more opportunities once they are released.

The Community Program Center will also serve as a home base for the Sheriff’s re-entry program, GED program and educational programs.

Construction is scheduled to wrap up in February of 2018.
