PORTSMOUTH, Va. – People for Portsmouth is hoping to bring some change to its city.
Today, they announced the eight candidates they’re endorsing to run for city council, school board, and mayor.
For mayor, they’ve endorsed John Rowe.
For School Board, PfP endorses Angelina Allen, Lakeesha “Klu” Atkinson, Sarah Duncan Hinds, and Ted Lamb.
For City Council, they have endorsed Lisa Lucas-Burke, Nathan Clark, and Elizabeth Psimas.
The group formed after the city fired Rowe as city manager and attorney George Willson.
Organizers say the purpose of their grassroots movements is to elect a more effective and transparent government.
If all eight candidates are elected, the group says they will have majority political control.
Rowe says the people want something new.
“People want a new direction for Portsmouth,”Rowe said. “This election is not about me. It’s about restoring the trust of our local government back to its citizens. It’s about improving our region.”
Rowe will run against five other candidates including Mayor Kenny Wright.
