VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Vernon Eaton was in Virginia Beach court Monday, where he was sentenced on animal cruelty charges.

Eaton was sentenced to 5 years with 3 years suspended, leaving 2 years to serve. He must be on good behavior for five years and will not be allowed to own a pet for the rest of his life. He must report to jail by September 26.

Police found a deceased dog in a truck bed in Virginia Beach last year.

A citizen called about a dog in distress in the bed of a truck that was in the 5000 block of Princess Anne Road.

The caller told dispatchers the truck stopped at the Kempsville Plaza Shopping Center.

Police and Animal Control officers went out to the scene and found a dog in the bed of the truck with what officials are calling “suspicious” wounds.

The dog had already died before officers arrived.
