Cortez Bumphus is charged with first degree murder, use of firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by convicted felon

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Police have arrested a suspect after a 28-year-old Hampton man was shot and killed.

Police arrested 24-year-old Cortez DayShawn Bumphus on Tuesday. Bumphus was charged with first degree murder, use of firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by convicted felon.

A shooting was reported near Briarfield Rd. and Chestnut Ave. on September 15.

According to police, the victim died after being transported to the hospital from the scene.

The victim has been identified as Kevin Anthony Jackson.

Jackson was driving a gray pickup truck and crashed into a tree after being shot in the 6000 block of Chestnut Ave.

Authorities responded to the call of the incident at 4:52 p.m.
