Man charged in homicide of 20-year-old man in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. – A 24-year-old Providence Forge man has been arrested and charged in connection to a homicide that occurred October 12 on Peterborough Drive.

Hampton Police responded to the area at 6:35 a.m. that morning after receiving calls about an unresponsive person.

Officers found 20-year-old Jakwan Barnes lying in the front yard of a residence, suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation revealed that two people were inside a residence when two other people forced entry into the residence, displayed guns, and demanded money.

A fight broke out between the people and as a result, Barnes was shot.

A short time later, 24-year-old Angel Rivas responded to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening gunshot wound as a result of the incident. He was later charged with five counts of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, two counts of Attempted Robbery, two counts of Abduction, one count of Attempted Maiming, one count of Burglary While Armed, one count of Wearing a Mask in Public, one count of Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling, and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.  He remains hospitalized at this time.

The circumstances surrounding this incident remain under investigation.  Additional information and/or charges will be released as they are received.
