NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Newport News Police are starting a "short-term" task force to address violent crime.

The program will focus on five hotspot areas engaged in violent crimes, mainly gun violence.

The areas include Marshall Court, Old Courthouse Way, 26th street and Chestnut Ave, Dresden Drive, and Aqueduct Apartments.

15 experienced police officers will canvass the neighborhoods, focusing on repeat offenders.

Officers will work in both plain clothes and uniforms.

The task force is set to begin in early November and end in December.

Afterwards, officials say they will evaluate the impacts and consider alternatives.

Police will hold a  public forum on November 1st at New Beech Grove Baptist Church to talk to the community about the program.
