PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A liaison has been appointed to assist members of the LGBTQ community on Thursday.

Portsmouth Police Chief Tonya Chapman announced that Captain Kenneth Saucer is the department’s first liaison to the local LGBTQ community.

The LGBTQ Liaison program was introduced by the Norfolk Police Department in August 2015 in order to have a program to focus on the safety needs of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning communities.

Virginia beach also appointed an LGBTQ liaison in May of 2016.

The position will also serve as an extra resource for members of the LGBTQ community who have become victims of crimes motivated by violence or hate.

The Portsmouth Police Department says they want to ensure that these hate crimes do not go unaddressed, breaking the cycle of animosity.

Captain Kenneth Saucer joined the Portsmouth Police Department on November 20, 2000 and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on May 28, 2011. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on February 1, 2014 before being promoted to the rank of Captain on August 16, 2016.

Captain Saucer is currently assigned as Commander of the Portsmouth Police Department’s Professional Standards Bureau.
