VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A law enforcement officer who has been on the force for 34 years says he was honored to be named the Lifetime Achievement Award during this year's Top Cop Awards.

Shawn Hoffman started with the Virginia Beach Police Dept. in 1982. He worked as a detective on the Homicide Unit for more than a decade before being promoted to Sergeant.

During his time working homicide crime, Hoffman helped solve two very high profile cases in the 1990s.

He obtained the confession of Shawn Paul Novack, who is now behind bars for life after murdering two young boys. Hoffman also had a hand in solving the first quadruple murder in the city's history by obtaining the confession of Denise Holsinger for her involvement in the murders at the Witchduck Inn.

But Hoffman says it was the crimes nobody knew about that bring him the most pride. He told News 3's Rachael Cardin that spending time on the street solving those nameless crimes have made his work worthwhile.

Hoffman now works as a supervisor for the Virginia Beach Police Dept.
