Lisa Lucas-Burke (I), running for Portsmouth City Council
1. Why are you running for office?
I am running for office because I want to use my education, skills and experience to help promote positive policy change for Portsmouth by the expansion of economic development opportunities, improving our public school system and advocating for our Public Safety Personnel.
2. Why should people vote for you?
People should vote for me because I am the neighbor next door who will be their voice for effective government. I am efficient, fair, and honest and I have a vested interest in seeing that Portsmouth succeeds in the region.
3. What’s your favorite thing about the area you want to represent?
My favorite thing about the area that I want to represent is our un-tapped potential to tear down and build-up prime real estate property on the Portsmouth waterfront that we need to market as our new Destination Portsmouth that will attract tourism, businesses and resident to our city.
4. What is the biggest problem your area is facing, how will you fix it?
The biggest problem that our area is facing is the tunnel tolls that place an unfair burden on residents and students who travel back and forth weekly for work and school. I would propose to continue working with the Virginia General Assembly and VDOT to revise the Toll Relief plan to include all residents in the Portsmouth/Norfolk communities who earn below $50K annually as opposed to the $30K rate proposed.
5. Describe Donald Trump in max 3 words?
UNFIT TO SERVE
6. Describe Hillary Clinton in max 3 words?
OUR NEXT PRESIDENT
7. What do you do for a living? Why do you do it?
I am the Executive Director of a Virginia licensed Medicaid Waiver Program (my family business) that provides services to adults with Intellectual Disabilities. I do this because I enjoy helping others who do not have anyone to advocate for and support their interests. It is also a much needed service in our community for the families in need of these type options for assistance and relief.
8. You’re going to be marooned on a tropical island for a week, you can only bring 1 thing – what is it?
If I were marooned on a tropical island for a week, and could only bring one thing, it would be my iPad. If it were to be a person, it would be my husband.
9. What do you think of Colin Kaepernick?
I think Colin Kaepernick is a bold and visionary young leader who has interested more athletes to take a stand for their beliefs by kneeling during the National Anthem. I applaud if for this stance on his belief.
10. Would you vote to fund light rail expansion in your area?
I would like to vote to fund light rail, but believe the community of Portsmouth would need to expend our resources in other areas initially to build up our economic foundation in order to gain a front row seat at the regional table in the future.
11. Will you respect the outcome of the election?
I will most definitely respect the outcome of the election and plan to congratulate local winners on Election Night.
12. Favorite TV Show?
My Favorite TV Show is The Voice.
