VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Damien Michael Dukes, 29, will spend 13 years in prison after murdering his mother with a dumbbell.

Damien Dukes will spend 13 years in prison after murdering his mother with a dumbbell.

A judge sentenced Dukes Tuesday to 30 years in prison with 17 years suspended.

Dukes was found guilty of second degree murder in May.

According to court documents, Dukes called police dispatchers at 5:53 a.m. on April 10, 2014 and told them he killed his mother.

Dukes told police the crime happened in room 106 of the Studios for Less Motel at 1717 South Military Highway.

When officers responded, they found Dukes’ mother, Victory Star Winner, dead. Her cause of death was determined to be due to blunt force trauma.

Dukes and Winner had an argument because she told him she was moving and he would need to find somewhere else to live. He told the dispatcher he thought Winners was going to take his car and his cat.

Dukes was in the room when police arrived. He was taken into custody.

Police remained on scene and collected evidence from the motel room, including two 20-lb dumbbells, two 10-lb dumbbells, black plastic trash bags, a handheld phone, and a comforter and blanket.
