Visitors at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island donated a record amount in the Veteran’s Day food drive.

MANTEO, N.C. – Visitors at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island donated a record amount in the Veteran’s Day food drive.

People donated 1,458.5 pounds of non-perishable food at the Aquarium’s free day on November 11.

The food drive was in honor of Veteran’s Day and the Aquarium was open to the public for free. Food donations were encouraged but not required.

The food was delivered Wednesday to the Roanoke Island Food Pantry at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Manteo.

Community members and visitors helped to make the effort a huge success.

Aquarium visitors have another opportunity to help out a local organization during the Santa Paws pet food drive.

The drive will be from November 21-January 3. Anyone who brings a seven-pound bag of dog or cat food will get into the aquarium for free!

Anyone who donates any pet food item, toy, or cleaning product will be entered into a drawing to win a painting by the aquarium’s resident artist, otter Molly!

The N.C. Aquarium on Roanoke Island, adjacent to the Manteo Regional Airport, is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Admission: Ages 3–12, $8.95; ages 13–61, $10.95; ages 62 +, $9.95. Children 2 and under and North Carolina Aquarium Society members are admitted free of charge.
