NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A new dream has come true for middle and high school students at An Achievable Dream Academy in Newport News, according to a Dominion spokesperson.

The school now has an outdoor classroom!

A group of volunteers from Dominion Virginia Power and Newport News shipbuilding made the classroom a reality.

Employees at both companies wanted to combine their skills and resources to benefit the community, education and the environment and they say this turned out to be the perfect project.

On Monday the volunteers finished the project and held a ribbon cutting with students, teachers, the Newport News school superintendent, Board members and more.

The students say they’re excited to have this new opportunity outside of their traditional environment where they can learn more about science and math through connecting with nature.

Studies have shown that students who spend significant time in nature are happier, better at building relationships and more likely to become lifelong stewards of the environment, the spokesperson said.
