73-year-old Elizabeth City woman found dead in home; Husband arrested

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - A 73-year-old Elizabeth City man has been taken into custody after his wife was found dead in the garage of their home on Wednesday morning.

Elizabeth City Police responded to the home in the 100 block of Golf Club Drive at 6:30 a.m. after dispatchers received a call from a man saying he just shot his wife.

Officers arrived to find 73-year-old Phyllis Mansfield dead in the garage of the home. She had been shot several times.

Her husband, Samuel Mansfield, was found walking down the driveway unarmed and was immediately taken into custody.

No one else was in the home.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are unknown at this time.

Mansfield has been charged with First Degree Murder and is being held at Albemarle District Jail with no bond.
