HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - Schools are shut down, people are stuck inside and families are looking for activities to pass the time and have a little fun.

"The virus can cause anxiety, depression and a major disruption to everyday life," said Sarah Decker, a Virginia Beach crisis counselor.

She wanted to help and reach as many people as he could.

"I spotted something on Facebook called the '#518 Rainbow Hunt.' That's my hometown of New York and I noticed it was bringing hope, so I decided to piggyback off that," said Decker.

So, she created the Facebook page, 757 Rainbow Hunt.

"I knew that this could bring hope to Hampton Roads," she said.

The good luck charms first started popping up about a month ago in Italy, a country ravaged by the pandemic. Then, the colorful arches spread to the U.S.

"Stroll through any neighborhood, and you are sure to see them in driveways, windows, even on painted rocks," said Decker.

Decker says it's a way for families to create positivity or to head out on a rainbow hunt to get out of the house and have a little fun.

"Kids can go around the neighborhoods look for all the colors, and it keeps them engaged since they are not in school and can't see their friends," said Decker.

Bette Cornett's lawn in Virginia Beach is now bringing unity, community and happiness to passersby - although she didn't even know about the nationwide Rainbow Hunt initiative when she created her colorful display.

"Every time I go through a struggle I find a rainbow, so I made a rainbow and then right after that, the virus hit," said Cornett. "I think everyone needs everyone at this time; people are scared."

"We know that after a rain storm there is often a rainbow. This is a big storm we are in, and we can create rainbows to get through this together," said Decker.
