ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Elizabeth City resident Teenae Jacobson started powerlifting after taking a few classes at Ty’s Military Fitness in Elizabeth City.

“I want to break records,” she said.

And she very well could, given her current track record. She recently won a national powerlifting competition, deadlifting 275 pounds.

The world record is 639 pounds, so Teenae has a ways to go — but Coach Ty believes she’s a contender.

“What she thought was her max, a couple of weeks later we did that, and we started progressing a little bit more,” he said.

The mom of six logs 15 hours a week at the gym while working a full-time job.

“You have your plate full, and it takes a lot of time to be a national champion. It takes a lot of effort. What drives you?”

“When it comes down to it, I’m competitive. I want my children to be proud of me and to say, ‘My mom did this,’” Teenae said.

Her coach is also proud. This power player is bringing a lot of attention to this unassuming little gym in northeastern North Carolina.

“We’ve got people asking, ‘Where are you from? Where are you at?’ We’re out here in North Carolina,” Coach Ty said.

Coach Ty and Teenae are pushing it to the limit — and are positively Hampton Roads.

“We’re here making noise as much as possible,” he said.
