VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Do you remember what it was like when you were young to come to the skating rink with your friends? Well, there’s a local group offering free lessons to help you lace up and get back out here.

“I think it’s really fun to be able to glide around on wheels," said Celeste Pinter.

“I got stationed here, and I was like, in my free time I’m gonna go skating, pick it up and do like I used to do as a kid,” said Taylor Marshall.

“What I like to do the best is go backwards," said Caden White.

These skaters are on a roll here at the Skate House in Virginia Beach, and much of it is thanks to a groovy group of skate enthusiasts who formed a group called Roll Bounce Rollout.

“The goal for us was to breathe new life into the skate community. What we had noticed was a dimming of the skate rinks, so we decided, hey, let’s bring some new life to it," said Tiffany Jenkins, one of the organizers of Roll Bounce Rollout.

So they are offering free lessons to anyone who wants to get involved, get active and be part of this fun family.

Theresa Crum, aka Smurf (her skate name), is an instructor here and a member of Roll Bounce Rollout. She volunteers her time giving free lessons.

“We’re getting a whole new generation of skaters, and talent is always evolving," said Crum.

Even though I hadn’t been on roller skates since I was a kid, Smurf gave me some pointers, and by the end of the lesson, I felt pretty confident rocking and ollieing on my own.

“We just want people to feel alive again. No matter what age you're at, it's always good to learn something new, and it’s great to have others to experience that with," said Jenkins.

Members of Roll Bounce Rollout and its lively leaders are paving the way for community fun and are positively impacting Hampton Roads.
