NORFOLK, Va. — Hundreds of all the latest children's books are on display at St. Helena Elementary in Berkeley in Norfolk. Nearly 220 kids are getting free reads as part of our If You Give a Child a Book campaign.
Kindergartners at St. Helena Elementary were so excited to get new books, they didn’t even wait to get home to crack open their new reads.
“I’m reading Gabby Doll House Sleepover Party," said kindergartner Kasey Hayes.
“What did you pick out today?" I asked another student.
"A Pete the Cat book and a Minecraft one,” said kindergartner Cody Hill.
I told him it's one of my favorite books.
“They have a lot of different interests and topics available for students, bright colors, great titles,” said Principal Angel Robinson. "I’ve seen Marvel, I’ve seen Disney, so our students are excited to see books that they are interested in."
Then the fifth graders filed in to shop for their new books. Even at this age, they know the value of reading.
“I just feel really relaxed when I read books,” said fifth grader Brooklyn Ore. "What kind of books do you like to read? I like mystery books."
These new books are in the hands of Hampton Roads students thanks News 3's viewers and employees, in partnership with the Scripps Howard fund.

We followed through with your donations that raised more than $13,000 this year, which translates into at least 2200 books for students in Title I schools.
“From pre-K to fifth grade, there’s every interest available for them to choose from today, and they get to take them home,” said Principal Robinson.
New books taking young minds on adventures is positively what happens if you give a child a book.
