NORFOLK, Va. - Local Girl Scouts left feeling empowered after taking part in Camp Fury at Nauticus in Norfolk.

The girls were able to rope up and rappel with firefighters with Norfolk Fire-Rescue.

Camp Fury is all about boosting self-confidence and leadership skills, giving girls the opportunity to learn hands-on lifesaving skills and techniques under the guidance of female firefighters and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and to see women in roles society may deem "non-traditional."

News 3 spoke with one of the firefighters about what they hope to help the girls accomplish with the training.

"Heights are not normally an instinct of most people, so just building confidence and believing in themselves and being in a position where they feel kind of uncomfortable with learning how to overcome that type of fear," said Krystal Cartwright, a Norfolk Fire-Rescue paramedic.

After learning the ropes, the girls learned vehicle extrication at the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Training Center on Granby Street.

Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast has hosted Camp Fury for several years and was thrilled to bring it back to Norfolk and Chesapeake for the 2022 season.

Throughout the week, the Girl Scouts will be learning all about firefighting and other public safety careers.
