ONANCOCK, Va. — A mural in Onancock offers a new look at a community favorite work.
"Offering experiences for people coming into town is what we are trying to do," said the Mayor of Onancock, Fletcher Fosque. "It's tough for small towns to survive in the United States, and we need to kind of reinvent ourselves, and the murals are just one step to do that."
"It's already an amazing town," said Muralist and Owner of Lubaton Murals, Seth Lubaton. "Just making it a little bit better. It was just an amazing opportunity to bring beauty to another place."
The mural is a reproduction of a Willie Crockett watercolor. If you're from the Eastern Shore, you know exactly who he is.
"He's a renowned artist in our community and is known for all his watercolors of nature," said Cynthia Holdren, Muralist Chairperson for Onancock Main Street

"The joke here is is everyone has a Crockett," said Lubaton. "Supposedly, wedding presents would be Crockett's. For me, to get to recreate someone who has such an impact on a community and also to give everyone a piece of something of him."
The mural is located on Market Street in Onancock. Just look up, and you'll see it on the side of the Crockett Gallery.
"It's interesting that people have different favorites," said Holdren. "Lot of people love the Willie Crockett reproduction, and then others love the one on King Street that's more colorful, lots of bright colors. So, honestly, it's great."
Lubaton says, this mural took him about 40 hours to finish.
"I got to make something that was in honor of that guy," said Lubaton. "Now, Willie's art will speak for so much longer and be part of this community for longer than it was already."
