CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Mom-and-son huskies, Babe and Buster were found abandoned on the streets of San Diego, California, during the California wildfires this past summer.
A San Diego resident — whose sister lives in Hampton Roads — rescued the pups. After months of trying to find their owners, she took action.
“We got a call, and they said they wanted to bring the animals across the country. They drove them from California,” said founder of Reba's Rescue, Charlie Daniels.
The good Samaritan delivered Babe and Buster to Reba’s Rescue in the Greenbrier neighborhood of Chesapeake.
“They were obviously scared. Their house probably burned down. We don’t know all the details. She couldn’t find the parents,” said Daniels.
But she knew they’d be taken care of at Reba’s. It’s a no-kill shelter with a strong track record of helping pets find loving homes.
The rescue was started by Charlie Daniels, whose wife, Melony, always dreamed of opening a safe place for animals like the one they once rescued — a golden retriever named Reba. Sadly, Melony died suddenly in 2017.
“A few years later, we opened up Reba’s in her honor — my beautiful wife. And that’s Reba on the wall as well,” Daniels said.
So far, the shelter has placed 700 animals in homes, and they hope Babe and Buster will be next.
“They’re inseparable. You have to take both together. They’re a bonded pair. They’ll go crazy if you separate them,” said Blake Richardson of Reba’s Rescue.
Reba's Rescue and the folks who lovingly care for the animals there — are positively Hampton Roads.
