CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Last week's unseasonably warm January weather inspired many of you to get out and explore some of our area parks, including me!
I checked out a park that many people drive by every day.
You may have seen a big lake right off the Chesapeake Expressway. That's Oak Grove Lake Park.
You can't exactly call it a hidden gem, because I think half of Chesapeake was there on Saturday, it was super busy, and for a good reason!
The weather was great and there's plenty to do at this beautifully wooded city park that's just off of Volvo Parkway.
The nearly two-mile walking path circles the 65-acre Oak Grove Lake, which is stocked with largemouth bass and channel catfish.
It's hard to believe that the lake began life as a VDOT borrow pit.
The dirt here was used in the construction of nearby roadways, and you get a loud reminder of that on the western side of the park, which is just a few steps from the Chesapeake Expressway.
But most of the park is a lot quieter, and we really loved the wide, packed gravel paths that are lined with tall hardwood trees.
The nearly two-mile walk was easy and beautiful, and if walking isn't enough for you, there are six different exercise stations along the way!
There's also a popular playground, picnic areas and a number of decks that overlook the lake.
Dogs are welcome at the park, in fact, I think on Saturday they may have outnumbered humans.
Oak Grove Lake Park is open from sunrise to sunset.
