It's late October and fall color is finally making its way to Hampton Roads.

We expect the leaves to peak here in the next few weeks, but I couldn't wait for the fall color to make its way to the coast.

Last week, I took a trip to the mountains for one of my most scenic walks, with the added bonus of a beautiful waterfall at the end of the hiking trail.

The Otter Falls Trail in a town called Seven Devils, about 20 minutes south of Boone, North Carolina, is the perfect weekend getaway.

The trip to the waterfall and back is only about a mile long, but the path is a little challenging in a few spots.

You drop about 230 feet in elevation from the trail head to the falls, which made the trip to the falls a lot easier than the trip back, but the beautiful fall foliage and the cool mountain air helped motivate us.

The trail to the waterfall isn't very well marked, but thankfully we were able to just follow our ears and the other hikes to find Otter Falls.

With a 25-foot drop, it's not the tallest...or most famous...waterfall in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but surrounded by colorful leaves, it was a really beautiful pay-off for the half-mile hike.

The weather was nearly perfect for our hike to the waterfall, and the next day it snowed!
