NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — If you need a little Christmas cheer, you’ll find it at Claus Cares.
This nonprofit that provides household supplies, clothing and other items for people in need in Newport News.
“Just 12/25, 24/7. We want to spread the joyous part of Christmas,” said Newport News resident Scott Sprowl, who started out playing Santa for his daughter’s photography business about four years ago.

When Sprowl slipped into that red and white suit, something magical happened, and he saw a greater purpose.
“Most places are seeing food insecurities, and there’s been a rise in homelessness in the area,” he said. “I think we need to be humans helping humans and people helping people.”
And as fast as Rudolph and eight tiny reindeer could carry him, the Coast Guard veteran started Claus Cares. It’s a boutique-style store in Grace United Methodist Church in Newport News that has everything from household goods to pet supplies — all free.

“We just had somebody come today, and they took a microwave home with them, some clothing, and toys for the kids. We’ve got a lot of clothing, and some of it is still new with tags on it,” he said.
He wants people in his neighborhood to have a resource, and a friend, who will lend a hand when needed.
“Maybe I want to go to church or out with someone, and I can feel comfortable coming here. They have nice things that you would like to wear,” said Lachan Cryer, a client.

“All of my clients come through here, and they are so grateful and happy just to have clean clothes—something they can go to an interview in,” said mental health worker Jonathan Sheafe.
To keep the store stocked, Sprowl holds fundraisers year-round, becoming Saint Nick for events like Surfing Santa, Pets with Santa, and Christmas in July.
“It’s not so much about me portraying Santa Claus and being Santa Claus; it’s about the joy of giving. We just want people to enjoy that spirit all year long,” he said.
With a twinkle in his eye, just like the jolly old elf, Scott Sprowl and Claus Cares will get you in the Christmas spirit and are positively Hampton Roads.
