MAKE MINE AN OLD FASHIONED
CELEBRATING NATIONAL BOURBON HERITAGE MONTH

Virginia is the birthplace of American Spirits; the first distilled spirits in what would become English-speaking America occurred in 1620. September is both Bourbon Heritage Month and Virginia Spirits Month. To celebrate we craft what is recognized as one of the first known true cocktails.

Our Old Fashioned cocktail uses bourbon from Reverend Spirits by R.D. Wilhelm Distillery of Norfolk. Sugar cubes, bitters, orange, and cherries round out the recipe.

Here’s how to make it: in a rocks glass, also known as an Old Fashioned glass, add 2 sugar cubes or 2 teaspoons of sugar. Add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters and a splash of water, 2-3 dark candied or canned cherries. Twist a 1-2 inch strip of orange peel over the glass and add. With the end of a wooden spoon, muddle the ingredients until the sugar is dissolved, and the cherries and orange peel is mashed, about 2-3 minutes. Fill glass with ice, and then pour in 2-3 ounces of bourbon. Stir and garnish with an orange peel and cherry on a cocktail pick.
