YORK COUNTY, Va. - State Police are investigating a crash that left an 18-year-old man with life threatening injuries Tuesday morning.
According to officials, around 8:31 a.m. police were called to investigate a two vehicle crash on Merrimac Trail and Armstrong Drive, involving a VDOT sign repair truck and a Chevrolet Blazer.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the 18-year-old driver of a Chevrolet Blazer, Sterling Piggott, was traveling westbound on Merrimac Trail when he drifted into the eastbound lanes of travel, striking a VDOT sign repair truck headon.
The impact caused the VDOT truck to be pushed into the ditch and overturn. Piggot was flown to Norfolk Sentara Hospital from the scene with life threatening injuries.
The driver of the VDOT truck, 66-year-old Douglas Wittekind, was taken to Riverside Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
Piggot has been charged with reckless driving/failure to maintain proper control of vehicle, police say.
