NORFOLK, Va. - The application period is now open for a major grant opportunity for Black-led nonprofits in Hampton Roads.

Facebook awarded $1 million to the Hampton Roads Community Foundation to distribute as part of their commitment to support Black communities.

Only 20 foundations around the country were awarded money for this initiative.

The grants are available for local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that are led by and primarily serve Black people.

At least 20 grants will be awarded and the funding is intended to be used for operational support.

"I think it will be life altering for many of our nonprofits," Linda Rice, Vice President for Grantmaking with HRCF told News 3, "Just to pay the day-to-day expenses, it's hard sometimes for nonprofits to find that funding. So this will give them a little bit of a cushion, a little bit of freedom to think about what they can do to strengthen their work, to enhance their impact, and to do more in their community."
