SUFFOLK, Va. - Are you an artistically-inclined person with a green thumb? Keep Suffolk Beautiful wants you!

Keep Suffolk Beautiful is looking for a local artist to paint a mural at the Community Garden at the East Suffolk Recreation Center located at 138 South 6th Street.

The mural will be painted onto all four sides of a large trash dumpster that sits next to the garden. The artist will receive $400 to pay for materials and their talent.

Anyone who is interested is encouraged to email Keep Suffolk Beautiful at KSB@suffolkva.us to receive a design brief. The deadline to submit proposals is December 31, 2020.

Proposals will include the design and list of materials. The chosen mural will be selected by January 31, 2021, and the mural will be completed by April 1, 2021. The design brief can also be downloadedhere.

The Community Garden as been expanding over the past few years with the addition of more beds for free adoption. Healthy Suffolk, Suffolk Parks & Recreation and Keep Suffolk Beautiful direct the garden, but families, individuals and organizations tend the beds growing vegetables, flowers and herbs. In addition to new beds, visitors will find a shelter with a picnic bench and a community shed to store shared tools.

“We are proud of how the garden is developing and very thankful to all the people who are adopting a bed and growing some food. Gardening is a great way to get outside, enjoy nature and go home with a fresh tomato. Next year we want to keep improving the garden by adding new beds but we also want to implement new ideas to enhance the space and make it even more inviting to the community," said Healthy Suffolk Garden Coordinator Shelly Barlow.
