Centerville Turnpike Bridge closed after barge strike; Coast Guard investigating

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The Coast Guard is investigating after a barge struck the Centerville Turnpike Bridge early Saturday morning.

According to the Coast Guard, the allision was reported at 4:46 a.m. The bridge was damaged, and remains closed to vehicle traffic.

As of Monday at 2 p.m., the bridge still remains closed to traffic.

A marine investigating officer and marine inspectors from Sector Virginia are conducting an investigation at the Centerville Turnpike Bridge to determine the cause of the allision.

The Coast Guard established a safety zone prohibiting vessels from approaching or transiting within 100 feet of the bridge. A 29-foot Response Boat-Small from Station Portsmouth and Chesapeake Police boats are also on scene to ensure safety in the area.
