Man accused of shooting woman to death in Chesapeake arrested in Norfolk

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The Chesapeake Police Department announced Friday it has arrested the man accused of shooting a woman to death on Chesapeake Avenue Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, officers received a call for the shooting at 3:26 p.m., and responded to the 1600 block of Chesapeake Avenue. When they arrived, they found 37-year-old Sammi Jo Burkhart suffering from gunshot wounds.

Burkhart was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

40-year-old Marcus Harley O'Leary was wanted on several charges in this homicide investigation, including armed burglary, abduction, first-degree murder, three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Burkhart and O'Leary knew each other, according to police.

The Chesapeake Police Department Warrant Unit found O'Leary near the intersection of Chesapeake Boulevard and Johnstons Road Friday and took him into custody.
