Two more inmates positive for COVID-19 die at Deerfield Correctional Center

SOUTHAMPTON Co., Va. - Two more inmates who had tested positive for COVID-19 have died at the Deerfield Correctional Center.

There have now been 14 reported inmate deaths, all who tested positive for COVID-19.

Reports say Deerfield Correctional Center is home to Virginia’s largest cohort of geriatric male inmates, many of whom have serious health conditions and reside in assisted living or nursing home environments.

Deerfield, which holds a daily population of 925 inmates, is the latest prison to see a spike in coronavirus cases and is still leading the state in inmate deaths.

As of September 27 there have been 723 total positive COVID-19 cases at the center. This includes ones onsite, at the hospital, deaths, releases, recovered, transfers in and transfers out.

According to the VADOC website, currently 368 offenders on-site and 35 staff members have tested positive for the virus.
