COVID-19 related deaths reported in Chesapeake, IOW Co., and Norfolk from Wednesday

Local region made up 23% of Va.'s 1,121 case increase

The Virginia Department of Health released their daily updated numbers involving COVID-19 cases within the state.

According to their website, there are now 116,579 total cases, 111,484 of which are confirmed and 5,095 are probable. There are 2,527 total COVID-19 related deaths, with 2,394 being confirmed and 133 being probable.

The case numbers are up by 1,121, hospitalizations are up by 65 and deaths are up by 12 since Wednesday. Locally, our Virginia viewing area saw 258 cases, 14 hospitalizations and 5 deaths from Wednesday's total update. Our area made up 23% of Virginia's total case increase and deaths were seen in Norfolk, Isle of Wight County and Chesapeake.

A total of 1,521,180 COVID-19 PCR tests have now been given in Virginia. Virginia's COVID-19 percent positivity rate sits at 6.5% and in our local area, the rate seems to be remaining steady with little increase or decrease. Portsmouth began reporting the highest percent positivity rate in our local region on Wednesday and is currently at 12.3%. The Eastern Shore District has been reporting the lowest rate with the steadiest decrease in the region, which now sits at 2.8%.

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association also updated their numbers. As of Thursday, there are 825 people currently being hospitalized, confirmed with COVID-19. There are 349 people receiving inpatient hospital care whose test results are still pending. Combined, there are a total of 1,174 being hospitalized for coronavirus related illness. That's 4 more hospitalizations from Wednesday.

The total statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations that have been reported over time is now 9,391.

264 confirmed positive patients, and those whose test results are pending, are currently hospitalized in the ICU.

148 hospital patients, both confirmed for coronavirus, and those with test results pending, are currently on a ventilator. 634 ventilators are being used in hospitals out of the 3,101 in the state - that's 20% usage.

14,764 patients who have been hospitalized for coronavirus have been discharged.
