Local area reports 8 out of the 14 COVID-19 related deaths Virginia saw from Tuesday

The Virginia Department of Health released their daily updated numbers involving COVID-19 cases within the state.

According to their website, there are now 109,019 total cases, 104,475 of which are confirmed and 4,544 are probable. There are 2,410 total COVID-19 related deaths, with 2,293 being confirmed and 117 being probable.

The case numbers are up by 737, and deaths are up by 14 since Tuesday. Our local Virginia area reported 8 of the 14 deaths. 4 deaths were in Virginia Beach, 3 in Norfolk and 1 in Accomack. Our local case increase was about 26% of Virginia's total increase.

A total of 1,402,471 COVID-19 PCR tests have now been given in Virginia. The percent of positive tests has dropped below 7% in Virginia this week. On Tuesday, the VDH reported the rate at 6.8% and as of Wednesday, it sits at 6.7%.

If you're interested or need a COVID-19 test, the VDH has a website where you can find testing locations, even free and drive-thru testing opportunities, throughout Virginia. The Virginia Beach Department of Public Health will be hosting two free testing events on August 20 and 22.

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association also updated their numbers. As of Wednesday, there are 900 people currently being hospitalized, confirmed with COVID-19. There are 343 people receiving inpatient hospital care whose test results are still pending. Combined, there are a total of 1,243 being hospitalized for coronavirus related illness. That's 10 less hospitalizations from Tuesday.

The total statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations that have been reported over time is now 8,925.

280 confirmed positive patients, and those whose test results are pending, are currently hospitalized in the ICU.

145 hospital patients, both confirmed for coronavirus, and those with test results pending, are currently on a ventilator. 601 ventilators are being used in hospitals out of the 3,073 in the state - that's 20% usage.

13,989 patients who have been hospitalized for coronavirus have been discharged.
