Virginia reports 1,126 new COVID-19 cases, 11 deaths; Virginia Beach, Newport News report highest local case increases

The Virginia Department of Health released their daily updated numbers involving COVID-19 cases within the state.

According to their website, there are now 123,668 total cases, 118,190 of which are confirmed and 5,478 are probable. There are 2,652 total COVID-19 related deaths, with 2,519 being confirmed and 133 being probable.

The case numbers are up by 1,126, and deaths are up by 11 since Thursday. Hampton Roads and surrounding cities made up 236 new cases and 3 deaths from Virginia's total update. The deaths were reported in Norfolk and Portsmouth.

A total of 1,619,053 COVID-19 PCR tests have now been given in Virginia. Virginia's COVID-19 test percent positivity rate has not changed since Monday and sits at 7.7%. In our local region, the percent of positive tests is currently around 10%. The Western Tidewater region is still trending upward with a percent positivity rate of 13.8%. However, Chesapeake’s rate is slowly starting to decline after seeing a slight uptick, with it now being at 10.8%.

The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association also updated their numbers. As of Thursday, there are 800 people currently being hospitalized, confirmed with COVID-19. There are 330 people receiving inpatient hospital care whose test results are still pending. Combined, there are a total of 1,130 being hospitalized for coronavirus related illness. That's 16 more hospitalizations from Thursday.

The total statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations that have been reported over time is now 9,741.

257 confirmed positive patients, and those whose test results are pending, are currently hospitalized in the ICU.

123 hospital patients, both confirmed for coronavirus, and those with test results pending, are currently on a ventilator. 623 ventilators are being used in hospitals out of the 3,090 in the state - that's 20% usage.

15,395 patients who have been hospitalized for coronavirus have been discharged.
