HAMPTON, Va. - Fire crews are wrapping up on the scene of a church fire.

Crews say they were called to the 200 block of West Queen Street around 6:15 a.m., on reports of a structure fire.

When crews arrived on scene, fire officials say they found light smoke and flames coming from this abandoned church.

Fire officials say this was an accidental fire by a homeless individual who was trying to keep warm this morning.

Battalion Chief Anthony Chittum told News 3 that “if you look at the church, it appears that there is a lot more damage than it was. The center section had structural issues for several years and was required to be taken down. So, again the parishioners were in the process of trying to rebuild the church for several years.”

Fire crews say the fire was out in 20 minutes and there are no injuries to report.
