Grain dryer catches fire at Perdue Farms in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - The Chesapeake Fire Department, with the help of units from Norfolk Fire & Rescue, responded to a fire at Perdue Farms in the South Norfolk area of the city Wednesday afternoon.

According to the department, the fire was reported at 1:04 p.m. A grain dryer containing soybeans caught fire, officials said.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the grain dryer. Multiple hose lines were deployed, with water also applied onto the exterior of the dryer to extinguish flames and cool structural steel supports.

The fire was called under control at 4:39 p.m. Employees evacuated the area, and no injuries were reported.

The fire's cause is currently unknown. Firefighters will likely be on the scene for several more hours.
