HAMPTON, Va. - Last week, Hampton City Schools (HCS) hosted a decorated vehicle procession for the class of 2020 at Bethel, Hampton, Phoebus and Kecoughtan high schools. The three-day event took place June 11-13 beginning with Kecoughtan on Thursday morning and concluding with Phoebus Saturday afternoon.

The graduating classes each wore their caps and gowns and got to experience their processional from their decorated vehicles. Each class received surprises en route to their high schools as members of the community who lived on the processional routes came out and cheered on the Class of 2020.

Since traditional graduation ceremonies have been canceled nationwide because of COVID-19, HCS performed several celebratory events to honor the Class of 2020 starting on May 18 and ending last week.

These events included seniors participating in a cap and gown celebration, a commemorative photo session where they walked across the stage, a Live Virtual Graduation Ceremony, and a processional “walk” with a Class of 2020 Decorated Vehicle Procession (the concluding event).

The city of Hampton also recognized the class for their resiliency and even spotlighted the valedictorians and salutatorians on the Coliseum’s digital marquee on Mercury Blvd.

There was also a congratulatory message displayed on electronic billboards on Interstate 64 and 664. City hall, the Hampton Convention Center and the Air & Space Museum were lit up from June 11-14 the school colors of each school to commemorate and celebrate the graduates.
