HAMPTON, Va. - During this global pandemic, business doesn’t stop for everyone.

The “We Are Still Hiring” post on the Hampton Police Division's Facebook page caught a lot of attention from job seekers - from people asking if the department will accept their medical background or security background to some asking about salary.

Sgt. Reggie Williams with the department says there are recruiters standing by to answer your questions.

“I think that during the pandemic, this is a time where people are considering a career change,” said Sgt. Williams.

He says they’ve seen a slight spike in applications for the police patrol officer position posted on the city website.

He says applicants can land a job within three weeks of submitting their application.

Now, that certainly doesn’t mean that you can be on the streets with a badge and gun patrolling.

"It just means we can have you within the stage of where you’re ready and getting hired and ready for the next upcoming academy,” he adds.

Even though, business hasn’t changed for the department, the way they interview has. Hampton Police are now doing virtual interviews.

“It’s something that we’ve tweaked as a result of our efforts to increase social distancing,” said Williams.

All applicants need is a computer.

“It’s the same extensive interview process with a background investigator. It lasts quite bit of time, and it covers all the same elements we would cover in person; it’s just done over the computer,” he adds.
