HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - First responders put themselves at risk everyday, and some have a new way of responding to medical calls.

Some fire departments are treating every call like it could be a COVID-19 patient.

In full personal protective gear- many departments send only one firefighter to assess a patient instead of exposing the entire crew.

And with firefighters typically living together during their 48 hour shifts - that adds another danger.

The other concern is that if this virus continues to spread, there could be a shortage in personal protective equipment for firefighters on calls.

It's important to note that firefighters respond to more medical, than fire calls on a daily basis.
