PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Portsmouth Police responded to a shooting Saturday afternoon that left a juvenile with life-threatening injuries.

Police arrived to the scene at Afton Parkway near the corner of Burtis Street at 3:33 pm. They said a young man was shot in the upper body.

EMTs also responded to the scene and took the victim to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries

One neighbor, who did not want to be identified, saw the aftermath of the disturbing scene unfold outside a home in the Cradock neighborhood.

“I don’t even know what else to say; it’s terrible,” the neighbor said.

The neighbor remembers hearing the screams that followed gunfire in the Cradock neighborhood.

“I was in the house and I heard six gunshots,” said the neighbor. “I always count them living out here because that tells you if it’s gunshots or fireworks.”

The neighbor saw someone lying on the ground.

“It was a little bit scary, but he was conscious. He never did lose consciousness. He was screaming in pain.”

The neighbor rushed outside after gun shots rang out.

“Then I heard the neighbor next door yelling and going across the street. I saw him running, so I came out.”

For the neighbor, these shootings are becoming all too familiar.

“I’ve lived here for four year and this is the fifth shooting that’s happened within a block of where I live.”

The investigation is ongoing.
