HAMPTON, Va. - Police are investigating a commercial burglary that happened on Election Day.

Around 4 a.m., Public Safety Communications got a call about an alarm activation at the 100 block of Old Aberdeen Road. Upon arrival, officers observed broken glass on the front door of the business and determined that a safe had been removed from the business.

While checking the area, officers located the safe nearby and confronted a male suspect, later identified as 48-year-old Derrick Barnes, who was taken into custody.

Barnes has also been charged in connection with a commercial burglary that occurred on October 29 in the 2300 block of West Mercury Boulevard.

He has been charged with two counts of Breaking and Entering and two counts of Petit Larceny, 3rd or Subsequent Offense, according to police.

He remains in custody at the Hampton City Jail.
