DUCK, N.C. - A 65-year-old local man died Friday while swimming in the ocean.

Officials said around 3 p.m., on Friday Duck Surf Rescue lifeguards entered the water to rescue a swimmer lying face down.

Duck Fire, police, and Dare County EMS units were dispatched to the beach access at Carroll Drive.

Officials said the man was unresponsive and CPR was initiated by lifeguards and bystanders.

Duck Public Safety personnel assisted Dare County EMS with patient care on scene. Despite all efforts, the patient was pronounced dead.

It is not believed that a rip current was involved, officials said.

Public safety officials said they urge beach goers to swim near a lifeguard and to ask surf rescue personnel about ocean conditions near them.
