Man wanted in connection to Newport News homicide now in custody

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Newport News Police were searching for a suspect in connection to a homicide investigation.

Officials say they obtained an arrest warrant for 19-year-old Alton Kasine Powers.

Powers was wanted for first degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, three counts of shooting into a occupied building, reckless handling of firearm, and shooting a firearm near school property.

Officers first responded to the 600th block of 25th Street at 11:38 p.m., on April 17.

23-year-old Stephen D. White was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials.

Police report that three males fled the area just after the shooting, according to surveillance footage.

On May 30, US Marshals located and detained Kasine Alton Powers in upstate New York. He is currently being held in New York, awaiting extradition to Newport News, police said.

On May 13, Shkise Fazion Cappe of Hampton was arrested and charged with 1st degree murder and nine other charges.
