SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Search and rescue efforts are happening off the coast of southern California for a possible Sailor overboard.
The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) initiated search and rescue procedures after a lookout spotted what appeared to be a person in the water on Thursday. One sailor was also unaccounted for during a command-wide muster, officials said.
The Navy said three search and rescue helicopters and a rigid hull inflatable boat were launched in response.
The Theodore Roosevelt left San Diego earlier this week for its second deployment this year.
During its first, a COVID-19 outbreak onboard sidelined the carrier for weeks.
