VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Police responded to a barricade situation Tuesday morning.

The incident took place in the 1200 block of Northvale Drive.

As of 12:30 p.m., a suspect has been placed in custody and police are clearing the scene.

Officials say around 8 a.m., a call came in regarding a man who was outside with a gun. When police arrived the man went inside and refused to come out.

Salem High School and Middle Schools are in the area. A Virginia Beach Schools official said both are on external lockdowns. No one is allowed in or out of either of the buildings.

The schools were on lockdown for about an hour.

Officials are working on a message to parents and as many students are still virtually learning, sixth graders and ninth graders returned on October 8.

There is no further information at this time.
