VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - News 3 is honored to be the media sponsor for the 2020 Valor Awards.

The Hampton Roads Chamber produces this event to honor the first responders who have gone beyond the call of duty during the past 12 months.

Will be sharing these stories of heroics all week.

This award is for Ultimate Valor to recognize the men and women who responded to the shooting at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center on May 31, 2019. Retired Police Chief Jim Cervera spoke eloquently a year ago about the call to duty of these first responders.

Cervera addressed the heroes who responded that day, saying, "There’s no way to describe an incident such as this. No police chief anywhere in the country or mayor - no fire chief, rescue chief ever wants to stand up and give information such as this. It’s a virtue to put yourself in harm’s way for people you have no connection to, people you’ll never see again. That takes a lot for someone to do. You were excellent in your response, you were excellent in your aftermath, you were excellent for caring compassion for all of the victims and the victims' families, and we thank you for that.”
