VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A special backpack giveaway event took place in Virginia Beach Wednesday.
The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at the Up Center in Virginia Beach held a drive-thru backpack giveaway Wednesday afternoon. Registered families came by and safely picked up new backpacks filled with supplies ahead of the school year.
The clinic's director spoke to News 3 about what it means to be able to help families out in this manner during the pandemic.
“As summer is winding down and people get back to school, we want to find a way to give back," said Iman Williams Christians, director of the Cohen Clinic. "About 50% of our clients are military families and kids as well. So we saw a huge need and we wanted to fill it.”
The giveaway is helping local kids be well prepared to head into the school year.
